2 Policemen Killed, 1 Critically Injured in Boko Haram Attack in Borno
Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have killed two police officers in an attack on a police station in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
Another police officer was critically injured in the attack as the terrorists exchanged gunfire with officers on duty at the station. The assailants were ultimately repelled with the help of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), who were stationed nearby.
Credible security sources reported that the attack occurred around 11:00 PM on Wednesday night. However, a police statement later confirmed that it took place at approximately 12:10 AM on Thursday morning.
The statement, signed by the Borno State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, mentioned that grenades were recovered during an assessment conducted by the State’s Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, at the scene of the attack in Nganzai.
According to the statement, “On 9th January 2025 at about 12:10 AM, unknown gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists attempted to invade Nganzai Police Division. Gallant officers on duty repelled the attackers after a series of gun battles. The terrorists threw hand grenades, which unfortunately landed on a shelter tent behind the division and fatally wounded two officers.”
The assessment revealed two hand grenades were recovered by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Base 13 in Maiduguri. The bodies of the deceased officers have been transported to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.
The Commissioner of Police expressed admiration for the bravery of the officers who defended the station and extended his condolences to the families of the two fallen officers.
“The Command remains dedicated and committed to ensuring safety and security for all and urges the public to remain calm as normalcy has been restored,” the statement concluded.
