No Cases of hMPV Recorded in Nigeria, NCDC Confirms

Risk Classified as Moderate

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reassured the public that no cases of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) have been reported in the country. However, the agency, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and other partners, has classified the risk of hMPV in Nigeria as moderate.

This update comes in response to growing reports of respiratory infections in various regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including China, where an uptick in cases of common respiratory pathogens such as hMPV, influenza, and RSV has been observed. The rise in infections is largely attributed to seasonal trends.

In an official statement, signed by NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, the agency emphasized that it is actively monitoring the global situation and has implemented measures to protect public health. The NCDC also urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid panic while continuing to follow preventive health guidelines.

Tips for Protecting Yourself During Respiratory Infection Season:

  • Practice Good Hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  • Follow Respiratory Etiquette: When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow, and dispose of tissues properly.
  • Stay Home When Unwell: If experiencing flu-like symptoms, stay home to avoid spreading illness.
  • Boost Immunity: Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and get plenty of rest to strengthen your immune system.
  • Seek Medical Attention: Consult a healthcare provider if you have persistent or severe symptoms.
  • Get Vaccinated: Ensure your vaccinations, such as those for influenza, are up to date.

The NCDC assured Nigerians that it remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding public health, regularly updating the public and ensuring the country’s preparedness against any potential health threats. The agency encouraged citizens to stay informed through official channels and to adhere to public health advisories.
