U.S. Mission in Nigeria Closes to Honor Late President Jimmy Carter

The United States Mission in Nigeria announced that it will close its operations on Thursday, January 9, to honor the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. The 39th President of the United States passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

Carter, who served from 1977 to 1981, was widely lauded for his post-presidential humanitarian work, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his advocacy of peace, democracy, and human rights.

A statement from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos expressed condolences, stating, “We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights. The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, January 9, in honor of former President Carter’s passing.”

Carter’s remains were transferred in a solemn military ceremony to the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, where they will lie in state until his national funeral later this week. His body, transported via a U.S. Air Force jet, was carried on a gun carriage from the U.S. Navy Memorial to Capitol Hill, retracing the route of his inauguration parade. Members of the public are invited to pay their respects as Carter’s casket lies in the Capitol rotunda.
