UK Introduces Application Fee for Visitors from 48 Countries Starting in 2025

From January 8, 2025, travellers from 48 non-EU countries who do not require a visa to enter the UK will be required to complete a pre-travel authorization process through the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system.

This move, set ahead of the European Union’s long-awaited ETIAS visa waiver, aligns with similar programs such as the United States’ ESTA. Under the ETA system, travellers will need digital clearance before flying to the UK, meaning they can no longer simply present themselves at passport control upon arrival.

Who Needs an ETA?

The ETA is required for all travellers who do not need a visa for entry to the UK. It functions as a pre-clearance, granting travelers the ability to enter the UK before their trip. This requirement will affect millions of travellers, including those from the US, Canada, and Australia. The system, which began rolling out to Gulf Cooperation Council nations in 2024, will extend to 48 countries by January 2025. Citizens from the European Union will need an ETA starting April 2, 2025.

The ETA applies to short visits—under six months—mainly for tourism or business. It also covers certain short-term study and permitted paid engagements. Travelers who are already UK residents are exempt.

Is an ETA a Visa?

Though often referred to as a visa, the ETA is technically a visa waiver. Citizens of countries that still require a visa to enter the UK must apply for one separately. The ETA is a reciprocal measure, as many countries, including the US, have adopted similar systems for UK visitors.

How to Apply for an ETA

The cost of the ETA is £10 (roughly $12.50), and applications can be completed online or through a dedicated mobile app for iPhone and Android devices. The process is quick—applications can be processed in about 10 minutes through the app, though applying online takes approximately 20 minutes. You’ll need to upload a photo of your passport, a selfie, and answer questions about your travel plans. It is advised to apply through official channels to avoid third-party fees and ensure data security.

After applying, you’ll typically receive a decision within three days, although the process could take longer. You can still travel to the UK while awaiting your ETA decision, as long as the application is submitted before your journey.

How Long is the ETA Valid?

The ETA is valid for two years and allows multiple entries into the UK during that period. However, since the ETA is linked to your passport, if you renew your passport during the validity period, you will need to apply for a new ETA.

Final Notes

Having an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. Border Force officials will still have the final say at passport control. Nonetheless, this new system will streamline the entry process for many international travellers while enhancing security measures.

This move reflects the UK’s ongoing adjustments to its post-Brexit immigration system, making travel to the country more regulated while also improving border security.
