Aiyedatiwa Pardons 40 Prisoners to Celebrate 60th Birthday
In a poignant act of mercy and compassion marking his 60th birthday, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has pardoned 40 prisoners within the state, offering them a chance at a new life. The announcement was made by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, who chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
The clemency granted by Governor Aiyedatiwa includes the outright release of 15 convicts, effective from January 12, 2025. Additionally, several death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, and others will see their terms reduced, giving them a renewed opportunity to reintegrate into society.
Dr. Ajulo highlighted that the decision was a reflection of the governor’s commitment to a justice system that values rehabilitation over punishment. The recommendations were made by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which carefully considered factors such as the nature of the offenses, length of imprisonment, health, age, and conduct of the prisoners.
“This initiative is a part of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s efforts to prioritize reform and rehabilitation in the criminal justice system,” Ajulo said, adding that the signing of the release orders coincided with the governor’s 60th birthday. Governor Aiyedatiwa, however, chose to forgo birthday celebrations in honor of the late Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), who passed away the previous week.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s act of mercy aligns with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, and it underscores his ongoing commitment to justice sector reforms aimed at promoting grace and second chances for deserving individuals.
