We’ll Resist One-Party State in Nigeria — PDP

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced concerns over the growing possibility of Nigeria becoming a one-party state, as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly expanding its reach by gaining more states ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP made this statement during a “Thank You” visit to the party’s office in Akwa Ibom State, where Governor Umo Eno addressed party executives, supporters, and stakeholders.

Hajiya Amina Darosimi, the National Woman Leader of the PDP, spoke on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC). She acknowledged the developmental strides of Governor Eno’s administration and commended the progress made in the state. Darosimi emphasized that the PDP remains committed to offering a strong opposition to ensure that Nigeria does not slide into a one-party system.

She affirmed that the PDP would continue to resist any attempts to diminish political plurality in the country. Furthermore, she expressed the party’s commitment to ensuring that Governor Eno secures a second term to continue the progress made under his leadership.

Governor Eno responded by expressing gratitude for the support from the party’s structures, which had been instrumental to his administration’s successes since his inauguration on May 29, 2023. He stressed that his visit was a return to his roots, as the party is the foundation of his governance.

The governor reiterated his administration’s focus on grassroots development, ensuring that the benefits of governance reach the rural communities. He outlined plans for town hall meetings in the federal constituencies, which will include empowerment schemes for farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs to further boost local economies.

Governor Eno also encouraged party members who have served in government positions to foster stronger relationships with their constituents, as this would enhance their political value and help sustain the party’s popularity.

The Chairman of the PDP in the state, Elder Aniekan Akpan, thanked the governor for his visit and his ongoing support for the party. He also announced the PDP’s resolution to endorse Pastor Umo Eno as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Akwa Ibom State.
