JUST-IN: Court Grants Bail to Naomi, Hamzat, and Fasasi

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, presided over by Justice K.B. Olawoyin, has granted the bail applications of Olori Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and Abdulahi Fasasi. The trio is facing charges related to a tragic incident at a children’s funfair organized by Naomi’s Wings Foundation in December 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 35 children.

Hamzat, the founder of Agidigbo FM, and Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, were granted bail after the court reserved its ruling on their applications on January 7, 2025. The court had earlier ordered their remand at the Agodi Correctional Facility in December, pending advice from the Oyo State Ministry of Justice’s Department of Public Prosecution.

The three individuals are facing a four-count charge that includes conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failing to provide adequate security and medical facilities during the event. The Oyo State government also filed an 18-count charge against them, which includes allegations of murder, manslaughter, criminal negligence, and conspiracy.

The charge sheet highlights the names and details of 14 of the 35 victims, including children as young as 1½ years old. The prosecution accuses the suspects of failing to provide proper crowd control, security measures, and medical facilities, which led to the tragic stampede.

As of now, no statement has been issued by the defense or the Oyo State government regarding the bail granted to the suspects.
