Kano Introduces Waste Disposal Bins in Public Transport to Tackle Littering

The Kano State Government has launched a new initiative to improve sanitation by installing waste disposal bins in public transport vehicles and key locations across the state.

The program, called the Kano State Waste Management and Refuse Disposal Initiative, was unveiled on Monday by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashimu. The initiative targets tricycles, buses, marketplaces, motor parks, and major roads, aiming to encourage proper waste disposal and combat littering.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Hashimu emphasized the importance of a cleaner environment, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable waste management.

“These bins will enable commuters to dispose of trash responsibly while traveling,” he said. “The government is determined to tackle littering head-on by working closely with the Ministries of Transportation and Commerce.”

Dr. Hashimu warned that failure to use the provided waste bins would not be tolerated, as the government takes steps to ensure compliance.

As part of broader sanitation efforts, the state has also reinstated street sweeping services, deploying workers to clean critical areas such as roads, markets, and public spaces.

“The outstanding salaries of street sweepers have been cleared, and they are being redeployed to enhance cleanliness across the state,” Dr. Hashimu said. “Our goal is to make Kano one of the cleanest states in the country while providing jobs for residents.”

The Commissioner called on the public to support these efforts by using the waste bins and avoiding littering. He urged transport operators, traders, and residents to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.

“Cleanliness is a shared responsibility,” he stressed. “The government is providing the infrastructure, but we need everyone—community leaders, traditional rulers, and religious institutions—to join in raising awareness and fostering a culture of cleanliness.”

Dr. Hashimu also invited private sector organizations to partner with the government on waste management projects, including waste-to-wealth initiatives, to further enhance the program’s impact.

With these measures in place, the Kano State Government aims to build a cleaner, healthier environment for its residents.
