NAF Investigates ‘Accidental Killing’ of Vigilantes in Zamfara Airstrikes
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has initiated an investigation into an airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) that reportedly killed several vigilantes in Zamfara State. The airstrikes were originally aimed at bandits operating in the region.
In a statement released by the Director of NAF Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Olusola Akinboyewa, the CAS acknowledged the ongoing controversy surrounding the recent airstrikes in the Tungar Kara area of Zurmi Local Government Area in Zamfara. These strikes were intended to target bandits terrorizing local villages.
While the operation successfully neutralized several bandits and facilitated the rescue of some kidnapped victims, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed concern over reports of civilian casualties. He emphasized the NAF’s commitment to the protection of every Nigerian’s life, stating: “As a responsible and professional custodian of airpower for national security, the NAF holds the preservation of life in the highest regard.”
The CAS confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the validity of the reports of civilian deaths, with findings to be communicated to the public once available. He reiterated that the NAF’s primary mission in the North-West is to combat banditry and restore peace, but stressed that the safety and well-being of all civilians remain a top priority.
Abubakar also reassured that the NAF would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities to uncover the facts and take necessary actions to prevent or minimize harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure during military operations.
The Zamfara State Government has confirmed that the deaths of the vigilantes were accidental, stating that they were mistakenly identified as fleeing bandits during the airstrike on Saturday.
