Real Reasons Lagos Assembly Members Impeached Speaker Obasa In Absentia
On Monday, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly unanimously impeached the Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, while he was away in the United States. The motion for his removal was moved by Hon. Obafemi Saheed, representing Kosofe Constituency 2, citing relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, who had previously served as the House’s Chief Whip. Hon. Mojeed Fatai was also elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
The allegations against Obasa included highhandedness, gross misconduct, financial impropriety, and poor leadership. He was accused of misappropriating funds, lacking transparency, and exhibiting an authoritarian style of leadership. Other criticisms included disrespect towards fellow lawmakers, suppression of legislative staff, and absenting himself from key state functions.
Additionally, Obasa’s ambition to run for governor in 2027 created tension within the House, especially among those with similar aspirations, including Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. In particular, Obasa’s disrespectful treatment of Hamzat during the budget presentation in November 2024, as well as his statements belittling past leaders of Lagos State, added fuel to the fire.
The motion to impeach Obasa was seconded by Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun, representing Ikorodu 2, and after a voice vote, the impeachment was carried unanimously.
Following the impeachment, Hon. Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as the new Speaker, with Hon. Fatai Ajibola taking over as Deputy Speaker. All standing committees and principal officer positions were dissolved, signaling a new chapter for the Assembly.
In a show of solidarity, the Conference 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen in Lagos State congratulated Meranda, the first female Speaker, for her election. The group expressed confidence in her ability to lead with dedication and inclusivity.
Meanwhile, some staff of the Assembly were seen celebrating Obasa’s impeachment, criticizing his leadership style and claiming he had neglected the welfare of legislative staff.
As the new leadership of the Assembly takes charge, the lawmakers have pledged to work together to enhance governance and deliver progress to the people of Lagos State.
