Speed Darlington Arraigned, Granted Bail, Says Lawyer Adeyanju

Nigerian singer Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington and Akpi, has been arraigned in court and granted bail, according to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju. Adeyanju confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday morning.

The post read: “Police finally arraigns Speed Darlington in court. Bail application moved and granted. We are trying to perfect same.”

This follows earlier legal actions by Speed Darlington, who had petitioned the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB), DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, urging the enforcement of a court order against his continued detention.

Speed Darlington’s legal team, led by Rosemary E. Hamza from Deji Adeyanju & Partners, had stressed that a court order issued by Justice M.S. Liman on December 23, 2024, mandated the police to either charge him within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.

The artist was initially arrested in October 2024 over accusations of defamation and cyberstalking involving Nigerian music star Burna Boy (Damini Ogulu). Speed Darlington was arrested in Lagos, transferred to Abuja, and detained by the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team. He was later re-arrested in November 2024 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State.

Following the court’s intervention, Speed Darlington has now been granted bail, and his legal team is working on completing the bail process.
