Federal Government Expresses Disappointment Over Emir Sanusi II’s Critique of Tinubu’s Reforms

The Federal Government has expressed disappointment over recent comments by the 16th Emir of Kano, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, regarding the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The government stated it was disheartening that reforms, which have been widely acknowledged as crucial by global experts—including by Emir Sanusi himself—were now subtly criticized by the monarch due to what it described as a “shift in loyalty.”

In a statement issued on Friday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the Federal Government responded to remarks made by the Kano monarch during a public event in Lagos on Wednesday. While Sanusi had acknowledged the positive initiatives of the Tinubu administration, he also expressed reluctance to fully support the government, citing personal reasons and what he described as antagonism from the government.

The Minister remarked, “We recognize that Emir Sanusi, like every Nigerian, has the right to express his opinion, whether in support or criticism of the government’s actions. However, it is perplexing that a leader of his stature—one from an institution that embodies fairness and justice—would publicly admit to withholding the truth for personal reasons, particularly over imagined grievances.”

Idris further emphasized that Nigeria was at a critical juncture, where bold and decisive reforms were necessary to address long-standing economic challenges. He reiterated that the current administration’s policies, including the unification of exchange rates and the removal of the fuel subsidy, were being implemented not for their ease, but because they were vital to ensuring Nigeria’s long-term stability and economic growth.

“The temporary pains being felt due to these reforms, as Sanusi himself noted, are a necessary consequence of decades of economic mismanagement,” the statement continued. “These reforms are already yielding positive results, including bolstered investor confidence, an increase in foreign reserves, and a more sustainable fiscal framework. Projections from institutions like the World Bank indicate that Nigeria’s economy is on a solid path to recovery.”

Idris specifically addressed Sanusi’s role, pointing out that as an expert in economics, the Emir had a responsibility to contribute constructively to national discussions rather than undermining reforms that are crucial for the country’s progress. “It is deeply disappointing that reforms, widely recognized as essential by experts—including by Emir Sanusi himself—are now being subtly condemned due to what appears to be a shift in loyalty,” the Minister said.

The Federal Government urged the Emir to rise above personal interests and avoid contributing to divisive rhetoric. “Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all sectors of society. We call on esteemed leaders to refrain from actions that erode public trust and instead focus on championing the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria.”

The statement also underscored that the Tinubu administration remained committed to driving economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity. “This is a time for collaboration, not distractions. President Tinubu’s administration is open to constructive dialogue with all well-meaning stakeholders, while steadfastly prioritizing the interests of Nigerians,” Idris concluded.

The government called on all leaders and citizens to work together, putting the nation’s future above personal interests, and to support the ongoing efforts to build a better and more prosperous Nigeria.
