Immigration Rescues 10 Human Trafficking Victims in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has successfully rescued 10 victims of human trafficking along the Nigeria-Niger Republic border. The victims, who were en route to Tripoli in Libya, were intercepted on January 12, 2025, at Naira Tsamiyar Kwance in Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Presenting the victims to the media in Dutse, the Comptroller of the Jigawa State Command, Mr. Tahir Musa, revealed that the group consisted of eight females and two males, aged between 21 and 30 years. The victims were from Oyo, Ondo, Imo, and Ogun States.

Musa stated that the victims had been lured from various locations to Kano, where they were to be transported to Niger Republic and eventually to Tripoli. From there, they were reportedly intended to embark on a perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

The comptroller also pointed out that none of the victims had valid travel documents when they were apprehended.

Following the rescue, the victims were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further assistance and investigation.

Mr. Musa cautioned parents and guardians to remain vigilant and protect their children and wards from human traffickers who often promise them better lives abroad. He also commended the Jigawa State government and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, for their continued support in combating irregular migration and human trafficking.
