‘Your Integrity, Wisdom Have Shaped Our Democracy’, Tinubu Hails Ally Akande At 86
President Bola Tinubu has paid an emotional tribute to Chief Bisi Akande, an elder statesman, seasoned administrator, and the first National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as he celebrated his 86th birthday.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, President Tinubu described Chief Akande as a staunch proponent of progressive ideals and a committed Awoist whose contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, nation-building, and development are immeasurable.
President Tinubu highlighted that Chief Akande’s political career has been marked by a commitment to selfless service, from his early days as Secretary to the Government of Old Oyo State and later Deputy Governor, to his tenure as Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003. Chief Akande also played a pivotal role as Interim National Chairman of the APC.
The President particularly lauded Akande’s leadership in the APC, stressing that his efforts were instrumental in the party’s success in the 2015 and subsequent elections. He further noted that Akande’s leadership in the pro-democracy group, NADECO, during Nigeria’s struggle for the restoration of democracy remains a critical part of the country’s political history.
Tinubu expressed his deep gratitude for Akande’s unwavering support and wise counsel throughout his political journey, especially during their time together in NADECO, which laid the groundwork for Nigeria’s return to democracy. The President also acknowledged Akande’s integrity, wisdom, and foresight in shaping the course of Nigerian politics.
“Your contributions to this country and your role in the establishment of progressive governance will forever be cherished. As you celebrate your 86th birthday, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for all you have done for Nigeria and for me personally,” President Tinubu stated.
He concluded by wishing Baba Akande continued grace, strength, and wisdom as he continues to impact the younger generation and contribute to the development of Nigeria.
