Zamfara Governor Approves Employment of 2,000 Teachers to Revitalize Education Sector

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has approved the recruitment of 2,000 teachers for both primary and secondary schools across the state as part of efforts to improve the education sector. The announcement was made during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Government House in Gusau on Monday.

A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that this move is a fulfillment of promises made during the governor’s electioneering campaign. Governor Lawal highlighted education as the second priority of his administration and stressed that it has already received significant attention, with tangible improvements being observed.

“Governor Dauda Lawal, in his commitment to revamp education in Zamfara state, declared a state of emergency in the educational sector on November 14, 2023,” the statement read. “The emergency measures undertaken by the state government include the construction and renovation of over 400 schools across the 14 local government areas, as well as the provision of over 12,000 two-seater desks for students across these schools.”

The governor further outlined that the government had also equipped these schools with more than 700 tables and 1,000 chairs for teachers, aiming to create a better learning environment for students and educators alike.

In his remarks at the SEC meeting, Governor Lawal stated that the planned recruitment of 2,000 teachers was part of his administration’s broader initiative for 2025. The recruitment will take place in phases to ensure the right individuals are hired, particularly focusing on addressing critical areas of need in the education system without any malpractice.

“The recruitment is part of the AGILE Program, which aims to completely reverse the decay in the education sector and improve the quality of teaching and learning in our schools,” Governor Lawal explained. “We are starting with the employment of 500 teachers in the first quarter of this year. Priority will be given to teachers in critical subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Science.”

Governor Lawal emphasized that the recruitment would prioritize qualified individuals who could make an immediate impact in areas where the shortage of teachers had been most detrimental. He assured that the process would be transparent and fair, with an emphasis on employing the best talent to boost the quality of education in the state.

This move comes as part of the governor’s broader efforts to reform the education sector, a critical step toward addressing challenges faced by students and teachers alike in Zamfara. With the recruitment and ongoing infrastructure improvements, Governor Lawal aims to lay the foundation for a more robust education system that can better serve the needs of the people in the state.
