Oyo Government Donates N20m to Support Fire Victims

The Oyo State Government on Friday presented cheques totalling N20 million to traders who suffered losses due to fire incidents in four markets across the Ibadan metropolis.

The presentation ceremony took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, with the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Hon. Mrs. Toyin Balogun, leading the event.

Support for Fire Victims

Balogun assured the beneficiaries that the government would continue its efforts to provide relief to those in need, stressing that these initiatives are aimed at promoting economic stability and healthy living for the citizens. She emphasized that Governor Seyi Makinde is a compassionate leader who actively listens to the concerns of the people and works to improve their livelihoods.

She explained that the N20 million donation is part of the state government’s commitment to supporting those affected by fire incidents in four markets: Gbaremu, Sango Ojurin, Oranyan, and Oke-Itunu. This disbursement is described as the first phase of the intervention, with plans to extend similar support to other affected markets in the coming months.

Praise for the Initiative

Several dignitaries, including Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, the South West Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bose Adedibu, Chief Babatunde Tijani, Chief Ashipa Ismaila, and the Asiwaju Oloja General of Oyo State, Chief Mrs. Juliana Raimi, praised the state government’s efforts. They highlighted the importance of the initiative in helping the traders get back on their feet and restore their businesses, which in turn benefits their families and communities.

The dignitaries also called on the beneficiaries to wisely utilize the funds to revive their businesses and adopt measures to prevent future fire outbreaks in the markets.

Distribution of Funds

The N20 million was distributed to the affected fire victims through their market leaders, who were instructed to ensure that each registered victim receives the appropriate amount. All four markets have confirmed the receipt of the funds, with the amounts matching those on the cheques presented to them.

Beneficiaries’ Appreciation

Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Rasidat Ahmed from Oranyan Market and Chief (Mrs.) Borode Omotayo, Iya Loja of Ibadan North Local Government, expressed their gratitude to the state government for coming to their aid. Both women prayed for continued wisdom for Governor Seyi Makinde as he leads the state, and thanked the government for remembering their plight in their time of need.

The intervention highlights the Oyo State government’s commitment to uplifting its citizens, especially in times of crisis, and supports the state’s larger goal of economic empowerment and stability.
