Don’t Toe The Path Of Simon Ekpa, Gov Nwifuru Warns Ebonyi Overseas Scholarship Students

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has issued a stern warning to the 204 scholarship students from the state currently heading to the United Kingdom for further studies. He urged them not to follow the path of Simon Ekpa, a separatist leader and one of the masterminds behind the ongoing crisis in the state, whom he described as a beneficiary of a similar scholarship but who has turned against his homeland.

Governor Nwifuru made the remark during the official flag-off of the Ebonyi State Scholarship Scheme, which was held at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Onueke, in Ezza South Local Government Area of the state.

In his address to the students, the governor expressed his deep concerns over the potential misuse of the opportunities provided to the students. He urged them to remain focused on their education and not engage in any activities that could bring disrepute to themselves, their families, or the state.

“I leave you with this: never forget where you came from. I want you to let the aspirations of our people inspire you, and let the challenges of our state drive you to succeed. While you are abroad, do not forget that we are counting on you to return home as great leaders,” Governor Nwifuru stated.

He further emphasized the responsibility placed on the students by the state, noting that their performance abroad would have a significant impact on the state’s future. The governor warned that failure to meet the state’s expectations would be viewed as a serious disappointment, stressing that the state would ensure accountability.

“We expect very heavy achievements from you, and the new innovations you bring back will be even heavier. Don’t think of disappointing us. If you do, we will regret sending you,” he warned, underscoring the high stakes of the scholarship program.

Governor Nwifuru also drew attention to the unfortunate example of Simon Ekpa, a former scholarship recipient who, after studying abroad, has been linked to instigating violence in Ebonyi State. Ekpa is a prominent figure behind the Biafra separatist movement and has been accused of fueling killings in the state.

“Remember Simon Ekpa, our brother who is now causing crisis by inciting violence and asking people to kill one another in our state. He was sent to Finland on a scholarship just like you. Do not follow his path. If you do, we will regret sending you,” Nwifuru warned.

The governor emphasized the importance of the scholarship scheme, noting that the state had invested a significant amount of money—N15 billion—to support the students’ education and development. He reminded the students of the generous living allowance they would receive while studying abroad, amounting to almost N1 million per month, stressing that they should stay focused on their studies and serve as good ambassadors for the state.

“This is a project that many people thought was practically impossible, but I believe that empowering our people is more valuable than building infrastructure. The investment we are making is worth it, as it will yield productive returns that will benefit our state,” Nwifuru added.

He also took the opportunity to commend Allen Onyema, the chairman of Air Peace, for his support in airlifting the students from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, acknowledging that his assistance contributed greatly to the success of the flag-off event.

As the students set off on their academic journey, Governor Nwifuru’s message underscored the high expectations placed on them and the desire to see them succeed and return as impactful leaders who would contribute to the growth and development of Ebonyi State.
