UPDATED: Tanker Explosion Kills 60 in Niger
A devastating tanker explosion occurred at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State at around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, claiming the lives of 60 people and injuring many others.
Reports indicate that the explosion’s high fatality rate was exacerbated by a large number of people who had gathered to scoop spilled fuel from the tanker when the blast occurred.
Kumar Tsukwam, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, confirmed the incident and the fatalities. He mentioned that a rescue operation was underway and that authorities had already taken measures to ensure the safety of road users. As a result, the gridlock along the Abuja-Kaduna highway has been managed and controlled.
The explosion has shocked the local community and raised concerns about safety and public awareness regarding tanker accidents, especially in areas where such incidents are common. Further updates on the situation are expected as the rescue and recovery operations continue.
