Edo Gov’ship Tribunal Relocates To Abuja

The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has announced its relocation from Benin City to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The move comes amid ongoing political tensions, including clashes between supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during tribunal sittings.

Parties involved in the case were officially informed of the tribunal’s relocation via a notice dated January 24, 2025, which was signed by the Tribunal’s Secretary, Mu’azu Ibrahim Bagudu, Esq. The notice states:

“I am directed to notify all parties that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, has been relocated to Abuja at the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road, Abuja, effective from Monday, 27th January, 2025.”

Sources suggest that the decision to relocate was prompted by violent attacks, frequent intimidation, and disruptions by political thugs during tribunal sessions. These incidents, including one where a lone gunman, dressed in campaign attire, fired sporadic shots while chanting slogans, created a sense of fear and insecurity among those present at the tribunal’s venue in the High Court.

The relocation to Abuja is expected to provide a safer and more neutral environment for the tribunal’s proceedings.
