Large Crowd Gathers in Kano for Tijjaniya Maulud Despite Police Ban on Large Gatherings
The Kano State Police Command has reversed its earlier decision to halt the National Tijjaniyya Maulud event scheduled for this Saturday at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, following strong opposition from the state government.
Initially, the Police had raised concerns after receiving intelligence reports suggesting potential terrorist attacks targeting public gatherings across the state. In response, security personnel were deployed to the stadium on Friday, ahead of the annual religious event.
However, the Kano State Government strongly criticized the police’s actions, accusing them of trying to disrupt the event, which has been held annually for 39 years.
Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, labeled the police’s security measures as “unfair and unnecessary.” He stated there were no credible threats to justify the heavy security presence and called on the Federal Government to step in.
In a Facebook post on Saturday morning, the Police Command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, attempted to ease concerns, reassuring the public that the security presence was aimed at maintaining order and safety during the event.
Kiyawa wrote: “Security personnel are present to ensure the Maulud is conducted peacefully and concludes safely. Please stay vigilant against potential troublemakers. May Allah (SWT) deal with anyone plotting harm. Kindly support us with your prayers.”
He also issued a warning about criminal activity, stating: “There are reports of individuals planning to set up phone charging stations near the Maulid venue with the intention of stealing people’s phones. Please remain cautious and alert.”
Despite the initial tensions, the National Tijjaniyya Maulud proceeded as planned on Saturday. A large crowd gathered at the stadium, with a visible but restrained police presence ensuring safety throughout the event.
