Tackling Irregular Migration: Italian Delegation Seeks Partnership with Edo State Government

The Edo State government, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, is committed to addressing the issue of irregular migration among youths in the state. This was revealed by Mrs. Edesili Anani, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, during a visit by Dr. Alberto Cilala, a consultant to the European Union (EU) and President of the Mattei Africa for Humanitarian Aids Initiative in Italy, who led a delegation to her office on Friday at the Government House in Benin City.

Mrs. Anani warmly welcomed the delegation and stressed the importance of collaboration in tackling the challenges posed by irregular migration. She expressed her appreciation for the initiative, emphasizing the potential positive impact it will have on the state’s development.

“This partnership is pivotal for reducing unemployment, creating job opportunities, and combating human trafficking and irregular migration. It will also drive improvements in education, skills development, agricultural investment, and infrastructure for our people,” she said.

Dr. Cilala elaborated on the Mattei Plan, which aims to provide Edo State residents with essential skills, including tailoring, furniture-making, and shoemaking. He explained that the initiative, backed by the Italian Government, focuses on six key sectors: education, healthcare, security, agriculture, renewable energy, and more.

“The goal is to foster integrated development, particularly in rural areas, and enhance the living standards of the people,” Dr. Cilala stated, adding that the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Labour will fully fund the projects.

Solomon Okoduwa, former Senior Special Assistant to the Edo State Government on Anti-Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration, highlighted that the Mattei Plan emphasizes practical solutions to curb irregular migration and human trafficking.

“While nine African countries are part of this initiative, Edo State plays a central role in the partnership with Italy. This collaboration will strengthen bilateral relations under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo,” Okoduwa remarked.

Olorogun John Paul, also known as Daddy Showkey and Brand Ambassador for the Mattei Plan, also praised the initiative. He noted that the program would offer beneficiaries in Edo State valuable training in various skills, setting them up for sustainable livelihoods.
