Ekiti Government Urges EEDCL to Leverage Power Sector Reform Laws

The Ekiti State Government has called on the management of the Ekiti Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (EEDCL) to capitalize on the 2023 Electricity Act and the Ekiti Electricity Sector Reform Law in order to make meaningful progress in the state’s electricity supply industry.

Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, the state’s Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, made this call, emphasizing that these laws present a valuable opportunity for the company to enhance its services. He assured that the state government is ready to collaborate with and support credible investors interested in supplying electricity to Ekiti.

Prof. Aluko made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the management of EEDCL, an unbundled subsidiary of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), to his office in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. He welcomed the company’s interest in the state and emphasized that the market is open to all electricity service providers.

The commissioner also recommended that the company consider renewable energy solutions for critical government facilities, including water dams, the Agricultural Processing Zone, and the Ekiti Knowledge Zone. Additionally, he suggested expanding the CNG-based Ekiti Independent Power Project (IPP).

Aluko noted that the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau had issued three key orders to guide electricity investors in Ekiti. These orders are focused on mandatory metering to ensure accurate billing, regulating electricity tariffs in line with the Federal Government’s tariff calculation, and standardizing electrical installations and equipment across the country.

The commissioner pointed out that EEDCL currently serves several local governments in the state, including Ijero, Efon, Ekiti West, Otun, Ilejemeje, Oye, and Ikole, through the Ilesa and Omu Aran transmission substations. He encouraged the company to expand its coverage further to improve electricity access across the state.

In his remarks, Engr. David Samson, the Executive Secretary of the Electricity Regulatory Bureau, commended the company for its proactive approach since its establishment. He urged the company to increase the energy supplied to Ekiti, emphasizing that the people are willing to pay for reliable electricity services. Samson also advised EEDCL to ensure its asset inventory and customer database are accurate, stressing the importance of metering every customer for proper energy accountability.

Mr. Emeka Ngwoke, the Chief Operating Officer of EEDCL, thanked the state government for granting the company a license to operate. He assured that the company would continue to extend its network to improve electricity supply across Ekiti.
