5 Years After, Kwara ALGON Gets Executives
After a five-year hiatus, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kwara State has successfully elected new executives to lead the association. This marks a significant development after a prolonged period of inactivity caused by a legal dispute following the suspension of elected local government chairmen and councillors by the state House of Assembly in 2019.
During the five years of the suspension, the chairmen of the Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) who replaced the elected officials did not form an ALGON, leading to the association’s dormancy. However, following the election of new local government chairmen in September 2024, the path was cleared for the reconstitution of ALGON in the state.
As a result, Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar, chairman of Kaiama local government area, was elected as the new chairman of Kwara ALGON. Other executives elected alongside Abubakar include Hon. Nuhu Podo as vice chairman, Hon. Jolayemi Benjamin as secretary, Hon. Sheu Ladan as treasurer, Hon. Abdullahi Bello as financial secretary, and Hadji Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf as public relations officer.
A statement from the public relations officer of ALGON, Hadji Yusuf, confirmed that the election process was overseen by all 16 local government chairmen in Kwara State, ensuring a smooth and transparent process.
In his congratulatory message, Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar urged the newly elected executives to work closely together, fostering unity and synergy to support the success of the current administration in the state.
