Sowore Granted Bail, Vows To Stay In Detention Over ‘Unjust Conditions’
Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has been granted bail following his interrogation by the Force Intelligence Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja on Monday.
However, Sowore has made it clear that he will not accept any bail conditions that he considers unjust or that could undermine his integrity. The activist, who was invited by the police to respond to several allegations—including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, cyberstalking, and attempting to prevent arrests—has strongly maintained that the charges against him are politically motivated.
Sowore voiced his frustrations on social media, accusing the authorities of targeting him due to his public criticism of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s extension of tenure. He further alleged that the police were planning to detain him and transfer him to Lagos for what he described as a “kangaroo trial.”
Despite being granted bail, Sowore revealed that he had been informed by Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, that he would be released pending the completion of the investigation. However, Sowore expressed his firm position on rejecting any bail conditions that could compromise his dignity or innocence.
“I have also advised the DIG that in accepting ‘bail,’ I will not agree to conditions that compromise my innocence, dignity, and integrity,” Sowore stated. He further emphasized, “If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court. Even then, I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated—it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the @PoliceNG hierarchy.”
Sowore’s defiance reflects his ongoing struggle against what he perceives as politically motivated persecution by the Nigerian authorities.
