Customs Seizes 199,495 Litres of Petrol in Adamawa
The Adamawa/Taraba Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted 199,495 litres of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) from smugglers near the Cameroon border.
Customs Comptroller General, Bashir Adeniyi, who led a tour for journalists to inspect the seized items, revealed that this was the third significant round of seizures under the Operation Whirlwind initiative launched in the state in May of the previous year.
The seized petrol, which was illegally being transported in drums and Jerry cans, was headed towards smuggling routes out of Nigeria. Adeniyi explained that the intercepted fuel was being moved through various concealment methods and complex smuggling techniques. The breakdown of the seized goods includes four fuel tankers carrying 97,000 litres, 1,363 Jerry cans (25 litres each) totalling 34,075 litres, and 311 drums (220 litres each) amounting to 68,420 litres.
These operations, carried out in high-risk smuggling corridors identified as part of Zone D, were based on intelligence-driven efforts by Customs officers. Adeniyi stressed the importance of these actions, underscoring that the Nigeria Customs Service is committed to halting the diversion of strategic national resources such as petrol, which is meant for domestic consumption.
The Comptroller General further assured that the ongoing Operation Whirlwind will continue to clamp down on the activities of economic saboteurs attempting to undermine the nation’s fuel supply.
