Pakistani Man Kills Daughter Over TikTok Videos

A man in Pakistan has been arrested for allegedly killing his teenage daughter after she refused to stop uploading what he considered “inappropriate” TikTok videos. The incident occurred earlier this week in Quetta, a city in southwestern Pakistan, after the father reportedly returned his family from the United States.

According to local police chief Babar Baloch, the father, in his 50s, confessed to shooting his daughter for defying his demand to dress modestly and cease posting videos on the social media platform. He claimed that her actions dishonoured the family.

The police are investigating the incident as an “honour killing,” a disturbing practice in which family members, often male relatives, murder women they believe have shamed the family. Honour killings remain prevalent in Pakistan, with estimates suggesting that around 1,000 women are killed each year in such cases, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).

Amnesty International has condemned Pakistan’s legal system, pointing out that many perpetrators of honour killings escape punishment due to a controversial Islamic law clause allowing the victim’s family to forgive the perpetrator. Although Pakistan amended its laws in 2016 to limit the possibility of family pardons in such cases, activists argue that these legal reforms have not effectively curbed the practice.
