Yobe Governor Elected Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum Chairman, Pledges to Unite Region

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has been elected as the new chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum.

The election took place during the 5th edition of the Forum, held in Maiduguri, Nigeria, from January 29-31, 2025.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Buni expressed deep appreciation to his colleagues, delegates, and stakeholders for their participation in the Forum and for making it a success. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to the peace, security, and development of the Lake Chad Basin region.

The Forum, which gathered state governors from Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, focused on fostering regional cooperation for stabilisation, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. The meeting, themed “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” underscored the region’s determination to tackle its complex challenges.

Governor Buni pledged to serve with responsibility and dedication, promising to work closely with fellow governors and development partners to ensure the success of the Forum and drive the region’s development.

He also commended the outgoing chairperson, Her Excellency Ildjima Abdraman, Governor of Hadjer Lamis Province in Chad, for her leadership during her tenure.

In her remarks, Governor Abdraman highlighted the importance of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum as a key platform for regional collaboration. She noted that Governor Buni’s election represents a significant milestone in the region’s ongoing efforts to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.

“As the region looks forward to stronger partnerships and continued support, Governor Buni’s leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing progress and prosperity across the Lake Chad Basin,” she concluded.
