FCTA Shuts Down Illegal Hospital in Kuje, Arrests Operator

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through the Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC), has shut down an unregistered health facility, Dada’s Clinic & Maternity, located in Kapwa, Gaube Community within the Kuje Area Council.

The operator of the clinic, Mr. Sabiu, was arrested and taken to the Kuje Police Station. The shutdown followed an investigation initiated after allegations surfaced about the clinic’s unsanitary conditions and unregistered status.

According to Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to the FCT Minister, the investigation began on February 2, 2025, when a team led by the Director of the Medical and Diagnostics Department conducted a site inspection. The clinic, which was operating without proper registration, was situated in a rented apartment ill-suited for healthcare services, presenting itself falsely as a Medical Outreach.

Preliminary findings revealed that a community elder had died after undergoing a hernia operation at the clinic, and other patients required emergency care after surviving procedures there. Upon inspection, the team found the clinic in a dilapidated state, lacking basic facilities such as windows, doors, a reception area, or toilets. It was housed in a deteriorating four-room structure with an unfinished extension.

Mr. Sabiu, who claimed to manage the clinic, confirmed that Dada’s Clinic & Maternity was not registered with PHERMC. Three patients, including an elderly individual undergoing intravenous treatment, were found at the facility. They were promptly referred to Kuje General Hospital for proper medical care.

The clinic was sealed, and Mr. Sabiu was handed over to the police for further investigation.

FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring safe, regulated healthcare. He reiterated that the accreditation process for health facilities is clear and that there would be no tolerance for unregistered medical practices, ensuring all such facilities are sealed to protect public health.
