Policemen, Civilians Injured as Violence Erupts in Osun Community

Violence broke out in Esa-Oke, a town in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, on Monday when youths in the town reportedly resisted an attempt to install a new monarch for a community within their domain.

The conflict was sparked when individuals from Ilesa allegedly attempted to install a monarch for Ido-Ayegunle, a community that the people of Esa-Oke claim falls under their jurisdiction.

At least 10 people, including law enforcement officers, were injured during the violent clash, which saw the use of dangerous weapons and sporadic gunfire.

In response to the unrest, the Owamiran of Esa-Oke, Oba Adeyemi Adediran, called for calm and urged security forces to intervene swiftly.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed that its officers were deployed to the area to restore order. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola, at least seven policemen were injured during the violence.

She assured that the police would continue their efforts to ensure peace returns to the community.

A local resident, Bola Adeyemi, spoke to LEADERSHIP by phone, explaining that businesses in the area had been paralyzed and residents remained indoors in fear of further violence.
