Kalu Appointed Chair of Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission

The Senate has appointed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North) as the first Chairman of the Senate Committee on the newly established South-East Development Commission (SEDC). Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during plenary in Abuja on Tuesday.

Kalu, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on Privatisation, will now lead the committee tasked with overseeing the SEDC, a key regional development body. Senator Ken Eze (Ebonyi Central) was appointed as vice chairman of the committee. Akpabio added that the remaining members of the committee would be revealed in due course.

Kalu’s appointment comes after his role in chairing the screening of nominees for the management of the SEDC, which also included the North-West Development Commission (NWDC). His leadership will focus on addressing critical issues such as civil restitution, erosion control, security restoration, and infrastructure improvement in the South-East region.

Additionally, the Senate confirmed the 18-member board of the SEDC, which will be chaired by Dr. Emeka Nworgu. Other board members include Hon. Mark Okoye (Managing Director/CEO), Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Kzenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, and several other notable figures. Various executive directors were also appointed to key positions within the commission, overseeing areas such as finance, corporate services, and projects.
