Kwara Gov Inaugurates Committee for Kampe Game Reserve Handover to Federal Government
Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has inaugurated a steering committee to facilitate the transfer of the Kampe Game Reserve to the federal government, officially designating it as a National Park. The reserve, located in Patigi Local Government Area of the state, was handed over following a presidential declaration in November 2020 and the subsequent passage of relevant legislation by the National Assembly.
During the inauguration ceremony in Ilorin, the governor emphasized that this step is crucial for improving the environment and promoting the sustainability of the state’s natural resources. He described the handover as part of the Federal Government’s strategy to transform Kampe Game Reserve into a National Park, marking an important moment in the state’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
The newly inaugurated committee includes cabinet members, traditional leaders, and senior citizens. It is tasked with overseeing the transition and ensuring the park’s successful establishment. AbdulRazaq, through his deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi, highlighted the state’s commitment to offering greater opportunities for growth and positioning Kwara on the global map for conservation and responsible management of resources.
The Kampe Games Reserve, named after the Kampe River, is one of the state’s natural treasures, and the governor stressed the importance of preserving and enhancing it for future generations. He urged the committee to actively contribute to the process and to help secure a sustainable future for all Nigerians.
The Minister of Environment, Mal. Balarabe Abbas Lawal, represented by the Conservator General of the National Park Service, Ibrahim Goni, noted that the upgrade of Kampe Reserve to a National Park is part of a broader effort to meet the global biodiversity conservation targets outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). He commended the governor’s quick action and dedication to environmental protection and national development.
The chairperson of the steering committee, Kwara’s Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, described the development as a major opportunity for environmental restoration, biodiversity regeneration, and tourism in the state. She emphasized the benefits it would bring to the local communities and neighboring states.
The Emir of Patigi, Alh. Ibrahim Umar Bologi II, expressed gratitude to the governor for his leadership and pledged the support of the Emirate in the successful realization of the project.
