Tinubu Approves N80bn for Reconstruction of Alau Dam in Borno

President Bola Tinubu has approved N80 billion for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Alau Dam in Borno State. The announcement was made by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, following the second Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Utsev explained that the Borno State government is collaborating with the federal government to initiate the project, which is set to be completed within the next 24 months. The first phase of the dam’s rehabilitation will be carried out between February and July 2025, with a particular focus on preventing flooding in Borno State during the year.

The project follows a report on the evaluation of dams across Nigeria, which identified Alau Dam as the most critical and urgent for rehabilitation. A committee was formed to assess the integrity of the country’s dams, and its evaluation confirmed the need for immediate attention to Alau Dam.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to address infrastructure challenges and enhance the safety and security of communities vulnerable to flooding in Borno and other parts of Nigeria. The project’s timeline and planned phases aim to ensure the prevention of flooding in 2025.
