Tinubu Commended for Signing Bill Establishing University in Ogoni Land

President Bola Tinubu has been praised for signing the bill that establishes a university in Ogoni land, Rivers State, marking a significant step toward socio-economic progress and reconciliation in the region. The move has been hailed by the Civil Society Coalition for Humanitarian and Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI), which commended the president’s commitment to conflict resolution and development strategies.

Kunle Yusuff, the Director-General of CSCHEI, called the bill signing a demonstration of Tinubu’s deep understanding of the need for sustainable development. The creation of the university is seen as a vital investment in education, fostering capacity building, literacy, and promoting socio-economic development in the historically marginalized Ogoni community.

Yusuff emphasized that the university would not only address historical grievances but also provide enhanced access to quality education, promote innovation, and equip future generations with the skills needed for local and national growth. The university’s establishment also symbolizes efforts to heal the rift between the Ogoni people and the federal government, following decades of environmental and socio-political tensions.

CSCHEI has urged local communities, civil society organizations, and government agencies to collaborate in ensuring the smooth implementation of the project. The organization also called on the National Assembly to play an active role in overseeing the university’s success.

Local leaders and civil society actors have welcomed the university’s creation, viewing it as an essential step in addressing educational inequalities and promoting long-term stability in the Niger Delta region. The project aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in advancing education, climate action, and inclusive growth.
