Only 1 NNPP Recognized by INEC — Dr. Ahmed

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, has strongly reaffirmed his leadership of the party, dismissing recent claims of a parallel faction. He emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognizes only one NNPP, led by him and the National Working Committee (NWC) inaugurated in 2022.

Dr. Ahmed made this statement during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, asserting that the party remains under his leadership. He also clarified that the official NNPP logo, recognized by INEC, consists of red, white, and red colors, a book, and an academic cap, with the slogan “Education for All.” He urged Nigerians and media outlets to confirm this information by checking INEC’s website.

Addressing reports of a factional NNPP National Convention held in Lagos, Dr. Ahmed rejected these claims as illegal, stating that no such convention had occurred outside of the party’s headquarters in Abuja. He stressed, “We did not hold any convention this year in any hotel lobby in Lagos,” adding that the NNPP does not operate from Apapa.

He accused certain former party members, allegedly supported by external political interests, of trying to destabilize the party in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. According to Dr. Ahmed, these individuals had engaged in anti-party activities following the 2023 general elections and were expelled after due disciplinary processes.

He pointed to a series of court rulings in Abuja, Ekiti, Port Harcourt, Awka, Kano, and Katsina, where expelled members were ruled against, including a Federal High Court ruling in April 2024 that declared these individuals impostors and prohibited them from representing the party.

Dr. Ahmed also noted that INEC had filed a legal process denying any knowledge of the so-called convention in Apapa. He emphasized that under Nigerian law, INEC must oversee all political party activities for them to be legally recognized.

“The greatest danger to any democracy is the disregard for the rule of law,” Dr. Ahmed warned, alleging that certain unseen forces were attempting to weaken opposition parties.

He urged NNPP members across the country to stay united and ignore the distractions caused by expelled members. Reaffirming the party’s commitment to providing a strong opposition, he stated, “Our NWC was inaugurated in April 2022 for a four-year tenure, which ends in April 2026. We will continue to represent the people and uphold democracy.”
