Zulum Commits to Rehabilitating Borno’s NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in the state by rehabilitating and expanding its permanent orientation camp.
Governor Zulum made this pledge during a courtesy visit from the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, and his management team at the Government House in Maiduguri on Friday. The NYSC camp in Borno had been suspended for 12 years due to the Boko Haram insurgency, and it resumed in 2023 at a temporary site located at the Umar Mustapha Elkanemi Arabic School.
During the meeting, Zulum emphasized the state government’s intention to fast-track the construction of a permanent site for the orientation camp to accommodate more corps members. He also highlighted the need to expand housing for the corps members, as the camp currently operates within a school, and the school may need the space back in the future.
“The Deputy Chief of Staff and Chairman of NYSC governing board, let’s see how we commence the construction of the permanent site and expand accommodation. Currently, the scheme is operating within a school, and soon the school management may need the space back. The earlier we start, the better,” Governor Zulum stated.
He also praised the contributions of medical corps members in the state and stressed the importance of having more graduates in fields like physics, mathematics, and English to help bolster STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in secondary schools.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to the NYSC leadership for the successful return of the orientation camp to Borno, which he said has significantly alleviated the difficulties faced by corps members who had to travel to other states for orientation.
Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, expressed appreciation for the Borno State Government’s support of the scheme. He commended the state for providing special allowances to medical corps members, augmenting their regular meals, and offering Hilux vehicles to the state’s coordination office. He urged the corps members to show their gratitude by staying in Borno and contributing to the state’s development.
NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Jiya, informed the governor that 991 corps members from the 2024 Batch C Stream 2 were currently undergoing their orientation in the state.
