DSS Teams Up with EFCC to Combat Terrorism Financing

The Department of State Services (DSS) has called for enhanced collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to improve intelligence sharing, particularly in the fight against terrorism financing.

This appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the DSS director in Enugu State, Mr. Humphrey Ohikhuare, to the EFCC Zonal Director, Enugu Zonal Directorate, CE Mohammed Shuaib Bello.

During the visit, Ohikhuare acknowledged the vital role the EFCC plays in safeguarding the nation’s economy by relentlessly tackling corruption and financial crimes. He commended the Commission for its efforts, which have contributed to more effective resource management for the benefit of Nigerian citizens.

He stated, “I recognize the critical roles the EFCC plays in addressing financial and economic crimes, which have been essential in maintaining the stability of our economy. I also commend your work in investigating and prosecuting fraudsters, which has helped us re-evaluate our strategies and ensure that the nation’s resources are used for the people.”

Ohikhuare emphasized the need for close cooperation between the two agencies in intelligence gathering to counter terrorism financing in the state. He noted that terrorists rely heavily on financial resources, which often flow through banks, and by sharing intelligence, the agencies could work together to sever these funding channels. He further added, “By working together, we can halt the financial support of terrorist activities, making such crimes less likely to thrive in Enugu State.”

In response, EFCC Zonal Director Bello expressed gratitude for the visit and highlighted the long-standing, productive relationship between the EFCC and the DSS. He confirmed that the two agencies have consistently supported each other in fulfilling their respective mandates. Bello assured the DSS of continued cooperation, saying, “As one of the board members of the EFCC, the DSS is an integral part of our operations, and we will continue to provide our full support. Intelligence sharing is crucial for both our agencies to effectively carry out our mandates. Without it, neither the EFCC nor the DSS can succeed. We’ve always collaborated with the DSS, and we’ll continue to do so.”
