PCN Restores Accreditation to 7 Hospital Pharmacies in Kwara After 20 Years

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has granted accreditation to the pharmacy departments of seven hospitals in Kwara State, allowing them to serve as internship training centres for graduate pharmacists.

Dr. AbdulRahman Malik, the Executive Secretary of the State Hospitals Management Board, shared this development in an interview with LEADERSHIP on Monday in Ilorin, the state capital. He explained that the facilities had lost their accreditation more than 20 years ago.

The seven accredited facilities are: General Hospital Patigi, General Hospital Offa, Kwara State University Teaching Hospital Ilorin, Civil Service Hospital Ilorin, Sobi Specialist Hospital Alagbado, Children’s Specialist Hospital Ilorin, and Kwara State Essential Drugs Project.

Malik described the accreditation process as rigorous and lengthy, which involved a thorough inspection of the facilities by a PCN accreditation team sent to Kwara State. He also highlighted that with this development, the state could now resume training intern pharmacists from all Pharmacy schools across Nigeria, a privilege that had been lost for two decades.

He emphasized that the accreditation process adhered to strict guidelines, with each facility required to meet specific criteria before receiving approval.

“This achievement is a significant boost for the health sector under the current administration, contributing to bridging manpower gaps in the sector,” Malik stated.

He also reassured that the Board would continue to monitor and supervise all the newly accredited facilities to ensure consistent improvements in healthcare delivery within the state.

In 2024, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq fully supported the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board’s efforts to seek the re-accreditation of the pharmacy departments of state-owned hospitals, which had been revoked over two decades ago.
