PICTORIAL: Nigeria Ranked 36th Most Corrupt Country in 2024
Nigeria has been ranked as the 36th most corrupt country in the world in 2024 by Transparency International, sharing this position with Uganda, Mexico, Madagascar, Iraq, and Cameroon. The country scored 26 points on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2024.
The ranking, which was released on Tuesday, indicates that Nigeria continues to grapple with significant corruption challenges. South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela were listed as the three most corrupt countries in the world.
Denmark topped the list as the least corrupt country, with a score of 90 points, followed by Finland with 88 points and Singapore at 84 points. Interestingly, no African country was included in the top 10 cleanest countries, although Cape Verde stood out as the least corrupt African nation, ranked 35th with 62 points.
Francois Valeria, the chair of Transparency International, emphasized that the 2024 CPI highlights corruption as a global issue that hinders progress, particularly in the fight against climate change. Corruption undermines efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of global warming.
The CPI, which ranks 180 countries and territories, uses a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean) to measure the perceived levels of public sector corruption. Transparency International also pointed out that, despite improvements in some nations, the global average score of 43 has remained stagnant for years, with over two-thirds of countries scoring below 50.
Valeria called for more action, noting that while 32 countries have significantly reduced corruption levels since 2012, the majority of nations have either seen stagnation or worsening corruption conditions.
