PDP NWC Disowns Anyanwu, Affirms Udeh-Okoye As Party’s National Secretary

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reaffirmed that Rt. Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye is the party’s National Secretary. This decision, which followed a meeting held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, was made after the NWC thoroughly considered a memo presented by the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagun, concerning the issue of the National Secretary.

The NWC’s decision is based on the Court of Appeal’s judgement, which declared Udeh-Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary of the PDP. The committee took into account the declaratory judgement from the Enugu State High Court, the appellate court’s ruling, legal opinions from Dr. Kabiru T. Turaki, SAN, and the PDP’s National Legal Adviser.

A statement issued by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, confirmed that after reviewing the memo and all attached documents, the NWC “overwhelmingly recognises, acknowledges, and confirms Rt. Hon. S.K.E Udeh-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary of the PDP.” This affirmation is in strict compliance with the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which the NWC states is the final and binding decision on the matter.

The PDP NWC also announced that it has begun the process of transmitting its resolution to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant bodies to ensure Udeh-Okoye’s recognition as the official National Secretary, in accordance with the court’s decision.

The NWC commended party members, leaders, and stakeholders for their loyalty, respect for the rule of law, and support during this period of transition. The committee assured the party of its commitment to adhering to the PDP Constitution, operational guidelines, and the vision of the party’s founding members to maintain the stability and growth of the party, as well as the promotion of democracy in Nigeria.

The ongoing tussle for the office of the PDP National Secretary arose after the former holder, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, vacated the position to run for Imo State governor in the 2023 elections. Udeh-Okoye had taken over the role during Anyanwu’s absence, which led to the legal contestation.
