Edo Internal Revenue Service Seeks EFCC’s Support in Tackling Tax Evasion

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), Barrister Oladele Bankole-Balogun, has called for the support and collaboration of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in combating tax evasion within the state.

He made this appeal on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, during a courtesy visit to the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, where he was accompanied by the top management team of the EIRS.

Bankole-Balogun emphasized the importance of working together with the EFCC, stating that the commission’s role in promoting justice and fairness is widely respected. He explained that the EIRS, tasked with collecting taxes—both personal and corporate—had observed instances of individuals and corporations evading their tax responsibilities, with some even engaging in acts of sabotage or financial crimes.

He acknowledged that collaborating with the EFCC was essential for the EIRS to effectively enforce tax compliance in Edo State, further noting that the commission’s involvement would help tackle the growing issue of tax evasion.

In response, the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC, ACE I Effa Okim, assured the delegation of the commission’s full support. Okim affirmed that the EFCC plays a key role in ensuring tax payment compliance and holding tax evaders accountable, and expressed the commission’s readiness to assist the EIRS in achieving its mandate.

The visit marks a step towards a stronger partnership between the two institutions in tackling financial crimes and enhancing tax compliance in Edo State.
