IGP Requests Senate Probe of Missing Firearms Be Held Behind Closed-doors

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has formally requested that the Senate conduct its investigation into the missing 3,907 firearms behind closed doors, citing security concerns. This request was made in a letter addressed to the Senate and read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Thursday.

The firearms, which were reportedly unaccounted for as of December 2020, are the subject of an ongoing investigation. In his letter, Egbetokun acknowledged the Senate’s efforts in probing the matter and urged that any future hearings on sensitive security issues be held in camera. He emphasized that this approach would help avoid misinformation, safeguard national security, and promote a more open and honest dialogue during the investigation.

The IGP further reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with the National Assembly to improve security and address the concerns of the Nigerian people.

In response, Senate President Akpabio confirmed the IGP’s request, assuring that the investigations would be conducted thoroughly, both by the Police and the Senate, to ensure accountability and transparency in addressing the issue.
