MTN Reverses 15GB Weekly Data Hike Amid Public Backlash

MTN Nigeria has reversed its controversial decision to increase the price of its 15GB weekly data bundle following significant backlash from its subscribers. The telecom company had raised the cost of the popular promotional plan from N2,000 to N6,000 earlier this week, sparking widespread anger across social media.

In a message sent to customers on Thursday, MTN acknowledged the frustration caused by the unexpected price hike. The company expressed understanding of how upsetting the increase was for its users, stating, “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 percent increase on your favourite digital bundle. We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story,” offering a lighthearted acknowledgment of the situation.

MTN issued an apology to its customers and asked for their forgiveness, stressing its commitment to improving customer satisfaction.

A review of the MoMo and myMTN apps confirmed that the 15GB weekly data bundle was no longer available, signaling the company’s decision to revert to the previous pricing.

This reversal comes as Nigerian telecom operators, including MTN, have been gradually implementing a broader tariff hike on both data and call services. The price adjustment follows regulatory approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 20, allowing telecom operators to raise prices by up to 50 percent.
