Adebanjo Predicted His Death Decade Ago — Afenifere

The faction of the Pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organization, Afenifere, which was led by the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has revealed that the elder statesman had predicted his death a decade ago.

In a statement issued in Akure, Ondo State, on Friday, Afenifere’s Secretary General, Chief Olusola Ebiseni, formally announced the passing of the revered leader, who died on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.

The statement described Adebanjo as an ardent Awoist and a champion of progressive ideologies, particularly advocating for the restructuring of Nigeria, true federalism, and ensuring equity, fairness, and a genuine sense of belonging for all of Nigeria’s ethnic groups.

“Ayo Adebanjo was known for his central role in the advocacy of restructuring and a more just Nigeria. For over a decade, Baba had often reminded his followers that at his age, he was already at the ‘departure lounge’ — preparing us for the continued struggle for a better Nigeria, a country he truly loved,” the statement read.

Afenifere added that despite his passing, the organization would continue to carry forward his vision for the country. “We will undauntedly keep the banner afloat,” the group affirmed.

The statement concluded by noting that further announcements and plans would be shared by the Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, in consultation with Adebanjo’s immediate family.
