Low Turnout, Vote Buying Allegations Mar Katsina LG Polls
Allegations of low voter turnout, heavy security presence and vote buying at some polling units have greeted the ongoing elections to elect local government chairmen, their deputies and councillors in Katsina State.
Security agencies including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have enforced strict movement restrictions while also deploying personnel to strategic locations across the state.
Authorities ensured tight security across major cities, with patrol teams and armoured personnel carriers (APCs) stationed in key areas.
As of 9:30am on Saturday, voter turnout in Katsina town remained low despite the presence of electoral officials at polling units.
The ban on vehicular movement was also strictly enforced, contributing to the slow pace of the election process.
In Tsani town, the situation was even more pronounced. When our correspondent visited, only two voters were seen at the polling unit, while security personnel remained stationed with an APC and a patrol vehicle.
At the Birchi South polling unit where 808 voters were registered, only a handful of voters showed up.
Some of them alleged that they were given ₦500 after casting their votes, raising concerns about electoral malpractice.
While no incident of violence or disruptions have been reported, the low voter turnout and allegations of vote-buying have raised questions about public trust in the local government electoral process.
Observers and stakeholders continue to monitor developments as results begin to emerge.
More updates will follow as the election progresses.
