Lagos Assembly Invited DSS To Forestall Obasa’s Planned Return, Letter Reveals

The presence of Department of State Services (DSS) operatives at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday was part of a strategy to prevent the alleged return of the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. A letter obtained by LEADERSHIP reveals that the acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. ATB Ottun, had formally invited the DSS on February 14, 2025, to help maintain order and peace at the Assembly complex.

This clarification contradicts previous reports which suggested that security forces, including the DSS, had disrupted the Assembly’s operations, blocking lawmakers from performing their constitutional duties. Initial media reports indicated confusion, with allegations of security operatives sealing off the offices of the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk of the House.

However, the letter from Mr. Ottun to the DSS clearly shows that the security personnel were called in to avert a situation involving the reinstatement of Obasa. The Assembly’s management had received credible information about plans to forcibly reinstate the impeached Speaker on February 18, 2025. This prompted the request for heightened security measures at the Assembly premises.

The letter, addressed to the DSS Director in Lagos, the state Commissioner of Police, and other security agency heads, urgently called for increased security and strict access control from February 16. The letter emphasized the potential security risks associated with the alleged plans for Obasa’s return.

The letter, titled “Urgent: Enhanced Security Measures For LSHA Premises,” outlined the steps needed to safeguard the Assembly and its members during this sensitive period. The Assembly officials are now awaiting prompt action from the security agencies to ensure the protection of the House.
