Army Transiting to Smart Tech for Efficiency, Reduce Collateral Damage — COAS
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has announced that the Nigerian Army is transitioning to the use of smart technology to enhance operational efficiency and minimize collateral damage during military operations.
Represented by Major General Adeleke Ayanuga, Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare, Lt-Gen. Oluyede made this statement at a seminar on digital transformation and innovation organized by the Army Headquarters Department of Army Transformation and Innovation. The seminar, themed “Enhancing Nigerian Army Operational Efficiency Through Digital Transformation and Innovation Within a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment,” focused on how digitalization, artificial intelligence, and smart technology are reshaping modern warfare.
Lt-Gen. Oluyede highlighted that the Army’s efforts to incorporate smart munitions and infrared technology into its operations are part of a larger effort to reduce collateral damage and increase the precision of military actions. He emphasized that digital transformation is crucial for enhancing the Army’s capability in night operations and its overall effectiveness in combat.
The COAS explained that the Army is moving away from traditional methods and adopting smart technology to stay competitive on a global scale. He emphasized that this shift will significantly improve the proficiency of the troops in providing timely and accurate fire support, as well as enhance the Army’s capability to operate under all weather conditions.
“The rapid technological changes we are witnessing globally cannot be overstated,” said Lt-Gen. Oluyede. “In our fight against insecurity, leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovation is key, and this seminar aligns with my vision to transform the Nigerian Army into a motivated and combat-ready force.”
The seminar also provided a platform for collaboration between the Nigerian Army, technology providers, security agencies, and other stakeholders. Lt-Gen. Oluyede stressed that these partnerships are vital for strengthening national security, which in turn contributes to the country’s economic stability.
He encouraged participants to think about a future where technological solutions are central to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. The COAS also expressed his appreciation for the dedication of the Nigerian Army personnel, promising continued support and resources to ensure their effectiveness in combating insecurity.
Major General OS Abai, the Army Chief of Transformation and Innovation, also addressed the seminar, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in tackling security challenges. He underscored that the integration of technology would enhance intelligence gathering and facilitate a seamless transformation of the Army’s operations.
