‘Illiteracy Can Lead You to Prison,’ Police Spokesman Adejobi Warns Nigerians

The spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has raised an alarm over the dangers of illiteracy, warning Nigerians that it could lead them into trouble with the law. He made the statement in a cryptic post on his Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon.

“Iilliteracy is a contagious disease and a big problem. It can lead one into jail, if not well managed,” Adejobi wrote.

The statement, though brief, sparked a strong reaction online, with netizens questioning the intent behind the message. Many accused the police of potentially using it as an excuse for illegal arrests or attempts to stifle public opinion.

In recent weeks, ACP Adejobi has been involved in tense exchanges with activists such as Owoyele Sowore and Barrister Deji Adeyanju. These interactions, largely taking place through veiled posts on social media, have added fuel to concerns about the Police Force’s stance on free speech and democratic freedoms.

The cryptic post by the police spokesman has raised eyebrows and sparked a wave of speculation, with many questioning if the message might be a precursor to heavy-handed actions by the authorities.
