Oyo Government Plans to Connect UCH to IPP Amid Power Outages
The Oyo State government has announced plans to connect the University College Hospital (UCH) to its Independent Power Plant (IPP) in a bid to address ongoing power supply challenges at the federal health institution.
In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, the state government acknowledged the electricity crisis facing UCH and emphasized that, although the hospital is a federal institution, it intends to offer a medium-term solution by integrating the hospital into the state’s power infrastructure.
UCH, one of Nigeria’s leading medical institutions, has been grappling with irregular power supply in recent months, which has disrupted critical healthcare services. Reports from both patients and hospital staff have highlighted how frequent blackouts have negatively impacted medical procedures, laboratory work, and patient care.
The Oyo State government’s intervention, though temporary, is expected to provide some relief to both the hospital’s management and its patients. The Independent Power Plant (IPP), which currently powers key state facilities, will be extended to UCH as part of this medium-term solution.
While officials have not provided a specific timeline for the project, the move represents a growing trend of state governments stepping in to address local energy deficiencies affecting federal institutions.
The announcement has been met with a positive response from patients and residents, many of whom are calling for a swift implementation to prevent further disruptions to medical services.
