Tinubu Mourns PANDEF Leader Edwin Clark
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the passing of Chief Edwin Clark, a former federal commissioner of information and leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).
Chief Clark, born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo in Burutu Local Government Area, Delta State, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 97.
President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, described Clark as a towering figure who led an illustrious life dedicated to service to the nation and his community. He served in various capacities, including as a councillor, state and federal cabinet member, and was a passionate advocate for resource control, economic justice, and environmental protection in the Niger Delta.
On behalf of the federal government, the President extended his condolences to the Clark family, the Ijaw nation, the people of the Niger Delta, and the government of Delta State. Tinubu mourned the loss of the respected Ijaw leader, calling his passing a deeply sobering loss.
Reflecting on Chief Clark’s life, President Tinubu emphasized that Clark’s influence was felt across Nigeria’s political landscape for nearly six decades. He was described as a courageous leader who always stood firm for what he believed in, even when it meant standing alone in the face of injustice.
“Chief Clark spoke for the Niger Delta. He spoke for the nation. His views and interventions on national issues were distinct and patriotic,” Tinubu said.
The President also noted Clark’s lifelong commitment to a united Nigeria, advocating tirelessly for national unity, justice, and equity. He described the late elder statesman as a political figure whose confidence and conviction were respected by his opponents.
“History will remember him as a man who fought gallantly for the rights of the people of the Niger Delta, unity in diversity, and true federalism. I know many generations will remain proud of how his efforts contributed to national prosperity and stability,” Tinubu added.
In closing, the President prayed for divine comfort for Chief Clark’s family, friends, and all those affected by this significant loss.
