Osun PDP Accuses IGP Of Plan To Assassinate Gov Adeleke
The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made serious allegations against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of being involved in a plot to assassinate the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke.
In a press conference held at the state party Secretariat in Osogbo on Wednesday, the PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, alleged that IGP Egbetokun had deliberately deployed Special Forces under his command to escort “miscreants” into the local government councils in Osun State. He described this action as a “blatant coup” and suggested that it was part of a larger scheme to assassinate Governor Adeleke.
Bisi further claimed, “The whole world must warn and prevail on Mr. Kayode Egbetokun to desist from being an enabler of orchestrated attempts on the life of our Governor. These plans, we want to emphasize, have been on the cards of the APC in Osun State since the good people of Osun voted them out of office in 2022.”
He continued, “The desperation to get rid of the Governor and take over the State through whatever means possible has been evident and clear since APC was shut out of government in Osun.”
The PDP chairman stressed that the global community should hold the IGP accountable if any harm were to come to the governor. He questioned the motives behind the IGP’s actions, asking why Egbetokun would sidestep the Governor of Osun State before making any decisions regarding the judgment on the disputes over local government administration in the state.
Bisi also criticized the IGP for what he described as “stark disobedience to laid-down protocols and rules,” particularly concerning the security situation in the state. He expressed concern that the deployment of security reinforcement had created dangerous conditions, allowing troublemakers to carry out violent acts, even as Osun had just witnessed nearly 10 deaths from violent confrontations in a short span of time.
The PDP chairman cautioned that Osun State should not be intimidated by anyone and questioned whether the escalating situation in the state was part of the reasoning behind the alleged extension of IGP Egbetokun’s tenure.
Despite the tensions, Bisi praised the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) for adhering to the rule of law in its preparations for the local government elections on February 22. He urged the electorate to come out in large numbers and exercise their voting rights on the scheduled date.
